UC Berkeley researchers are creating virtual simulations of the Lower Pajaro River Valley to better integrate ecology, climate change and social equity into flood management.

In early March 2023, a levee breach on the Pajaro River flooded the nearby town of Pajaro, an unincorporated community of about 3,000 people located in Monterey County, California.

By analyzing historical maps, the Pajaro Regional Flood Agency determined that the original path of the river intersects with the levee at this point, indicating that there may be an underlying instability in the ground that could have contributed to the breach.
