Two women died after being mowed down by a speeding train near Avarampalayam in Coimbatore on Thursday.Kavitha (45) and Yasodha (24), both residents of Palladam in the Tiruppur district and relatives, were killed in the accident at Korathottam near Avarampalayam between Coimbatore North and Peelamedu railway stations.The Government Railway Police said that the two persons were among the contract labourers who were clearing waste along the railway track on Thursday.The accident took place when the labourers resumed their work after the lunch break. The two women were crossing a track and failed to notice a fast approaching train. It struck both of them, killing them on the spot.Personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) station, Coimbatore, rushed to the spot after being alerted about the accident. They recovered and shifted the bodies for post-mortem examination. The GRP has launched an investigation into the accident. Published - August 13, 2026 09:23 pm IST
