Family members of a Mayiladuthurai fisherman, who was allegedly killed in Saudi Arabia while fishing, have pleaded with the State government to repatriate his body at the earliest.Fisherman P. Maveeran, 39, of Thoduvai village in Sirkali taluk of Mayiladuthurai district was allegedly shot dead while fishing in Saudi Arabia along with two other fishermen hailing from Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts on the night of August 10.The family of Maveeran were informed of his death on Tuesday morning by those who accompanied him while fishing, said a close relative of the victim. Maveeran had been indulging in fishing activity in Saudi Arabia for a few years now and had been visiting his village. After returning to his village to meet his family, Maveeran left for Saudi Arabia in May, said S. Kumar, his close relative. The family was informed on Tuesday that Maveeran was shot dead while fishing, he added. Maveeran is survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son. The family members of Maveeran submitted a petition to Mayiladuthurai District Collector H.S. Srikanth on Wednesday requesting that the victim’s body be repatriated to his native village at the earliest. The Mayiladuthurai district administration brought the issue to the notice of the State government through a written communication. The matter has been conveyed to the Indian Embassy, the administration authorities said. A Fisheries Department official in Mayiladuthurai district met the family members of Maveeran at Thoduvai on Thursday and apprised them of the steps taken by the district administration and the department.
