Twelve persons were injured on Thursday after the concrete roof of the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vellapatti near Thalamuthu Nagar collapsed while concrete was being laid as part of the ongoing construction work of the church.According to police, while the work was progressing, the iron rods and supports placed underneath the roof to hold the concrete unexpectedly shifted. As a result, the supports gave away, causing the concrete roof to suddenly collapse.The workers engaged in the work fell into debris and were trapped. Fire and Rescue Service Personnel and Thalamuthu Nagar police rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.The injured were identified as P. Moorthy, 38 of Kovilpatti, M. Antony Raj, 52 and A. Mariya Nixon, 34 of Vellapatti, P. Ramar, 29 of Thattaparai, Raghul Hussain, 32 of Bihar, G. Manikandan, 22 of Thoothukudi, S. Subash, 22 of Ottapidaram, N. Muralidharan, 42, R. Vijay, 44 and Rajkumar, 45 of Kumbakonam, V. Sekar, 42 of Kadayam, and S. Chandrasekar, 43 of Thalamuthu Nagar.All 12 injured were rescued and sent to Government Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital for treatment.Thalamuthu Nagar police have registered a case and further investigations are under way.
