At least 15 devotees, including seven children, were injured when a makeshift tin roof sheet collapsed near the Idumbankulam tank by the Sri Dhandayuthapani Temple in Palani on Thursday (April 30, 2026) night.
Officials from the HR&CE Department said that a group of pilgrims from Thanjavur and Virudhunagar districts had come to the shrine on Thursday evening. After taking a dip in the tank, they were about to climb the hills for darshan, when heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, forced them to take shelter under a makeshift roof.
However, the tin sheet abruptly collapsed due to the winds, injuring them. The devotees were all rescued, and ambulance services were sought at the site.
Several women and children, who suffered multiple injuries, were rushed to the Palani Government Hospital. Doctors attending on the patients said they were stable. As the impact of the fall of the sheet was heavy, CT scan and other examinations were mandatorily conducted.
The Temple police are investigating the case.
