Next year’s contest will bring a first for Bulgaria and Canada
Burgas was selected on Thursday to host next year’s Eurovision song contest, moving the event east to the Black Sea coast.
The decision comes after Bulgaria won last year’s competition, with the winning performance by singer DARA. It was Bulgaria’s first-ever victory and followed three years of absence from the competition.
Burgas is known for its beaches and busy summer season, but next May it will be swapping holidaymakers for Eurovision fans and performers from across the continent.
The city, the fourth-largest in the country, beat the capital, Sofia, in the final stage of the host-city race. The city’s mayor, Dimitar Nikolov, called it an “exceptional honour”.
