ELECTIONS: Mabumba royal establishment condemns abductions ahead of elections
The Mabumba Royal Establishment of the Ushi people has called for an immediate end to reported abductions, enforced disappearances and prolonged detention of citizens ahead of Zambia's general elections.
Zambians vote on August 13 in presidential and parliamentary elections, in what is listed as the 2026 Zambian general election on 13 August 2026. The election is widely watched because Zambia is one of the few African countries to have experienced peaceful transfers of power between multiple political parties.
In a statement issued from Mansa on Tuesday, the Royal Establishment said it was saddened by reports of citizens being abducted and held extra-judicially while exercising their constitutional right to associate with political parties of their choice.
"We have seen footage of unarmed women being picked up like dangerous criminals," the statement reads.
