Bayern Munich has turned down Aston Villa’s proposal to sign Joao Palhinha on loan with an option to buy, with the German club making clear it will only entertain a permanent transfer for the 31-year-old midfielder. The two clubs have been locked in negotiations for nearly a month, and the gap between their preferred deal structures remains the central obstacle.
Bayern values Palhinha at around €30 million, roughly £25 million, and has no interest in a temporary arrangement. Villa, meanwhile, is trying to manage its spending carefully and would prefer a loan that delays or reduces the financial commitment.
Why Villa wants Palhinha, and why Bayern wants him gone
Villa’s interest in Palhinha is driven largely by necessity. Midfielder Amadou Onana has been sidelined with a long-term injury, leaving a significant hole in Unai Emery’s squad. Palhinha, a physical and disciplined defensive midfielder with extensive Premier League experience, fits the profile of what Villa needs to stay competitive across multiple competitions.
The Portuguese international knows England well. Bayern signed him from Fulham in July 2024 for €51 million, but his time in Munich never truly clicked. He spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, suggesting that Bayern had already started to move on from the player well before this summer.
