Shares of Tata Group companies came under broad selling pressure on Wednesday after N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, announced he would not seek a third term after his current tenure ends in February 2027. The development wiped off roughly ₹45,000 crore off the group’s combined market capitalisation in a single session.Chandrasekaran’s announcement came ahead of the group’s Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 18. The 63-year-old Tata veteran, said both principal shareholders, Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, had unanimously resolved to extend his term for five years, but the resolution tabled at the Tata Sons board on February 24 failed to secure full board support.The chairman had faced pointed questions over losses at Air India, underperforming digital ventures, and capital allocation to new businesses, including semiconductors.Biggest casualtyTata Consultancy Services, the group’s largest listed entity with a market cap of ₹8.50 lakh crore, bore the sharpest absolute brunt, closing down 3.93 per cent at ₹2,349.70, its lowest in the session touching ₹2,300.10. The stock is down 27.20 per cent year-to-date and 22.59 per cent over the past year, significantly underperforming the Nifty 50’s 0.21 per cent one-year decline.Tata Elxsi dropped 2.19 per cent to ₹3,711.90, extending its year-to-date loss to 28.77 per cent.In the automotive segment, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles declined 1.32 per cent to ₹343.00, now down 47.56 per cent over one year, the steepest one-year fall among the group’s listed entities. Tata Motors Ltd, the demerged commercial vehicles entity listed in November 2025, bucked the trend, closing up 1.52 per cent at ₹457.05.Tata Consumer Products fell 1.49 per cent to ₹1,061.90, Tata Steel shed 1.09 per cent to ₹186.20, and Tata Communications declined 0.57 per cent to ₹1,736.20. Tata Power was nearly flat, down 0.14 per cent to ₹379.45. Indian Hotels closed unchanged at ₹724.00. Voltas and Tata Chemicals were marginal gainers.Titan Company was the session’s standout, slipping just 0.57 per cent to ₹5,099, even as it touched a 52-week high of ₹5,168 the previous session, August 11.
