It will mark the return of total solar eclipse visibility to central and western mainland Europe after 27 years. The period of totality is expected to last for a maximum of around 2 minutes and 18 seconds.The total solar eclipse will occur on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with the Moon’s shadow sweeping across the Northern Hemisphere before reaching parts of Europe. The eclipse will first be visible over far northern Russia at around 17:00 UTC (1 p.m. ET). From there, it will travel towards Greenland and Iceland, before moving across parts of Spain and Portugal. The timing will vary depending on the location. The eclipse is expected to reach northeast Greenland at around 1:30 p.m. ET and western Iceland at approximately 1:45 p.m. ET. In Reykjavík, totality will begin at about 5:48 p.m. local time. After crossing the North Atlantic, the eclipse will arrive over northern Spain at around 2:30 p.m. ET. When Can You Watch the Solar Eclipse in the US?The US will not experience totality during the August 12 solar eclipse, but a partial solar eclipse will be visible from parts of the country. According to NASA, the partial eclipse can be seen across areas of the northern US, including Alaska, extending southward toward North Carolina.
