The Madlanga Commission has heard explosive testimony alleging that secret meetings, private emails, a witness flight and questionable investigative tactics formed part of a coordinated effort targeting National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo.
State Advocate Drushantha Ramsamy has revealed an unusual chain of events involving Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, the Inspector-General of Intelligence (IGI) and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), alleging that Mchunu routed a sensitive intelligence report to investigators outside established procedures.
Testifying at the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday, Ramsamy said the IGI had previously refused to provide IDAC with the report, despite information-sharing arrangements between the two bodies.
She said suspended IDAC chief investigator Dylan Perumal informed investigators in September that Mchunu had intervened.
“In September, Perumal told us that Mchunu, arranged with someone to fly to him in the Eastern Cape and provide the IGI report,” Ramsamy said.
