MANILA, Philippines — Many of Vice President Sara Duterte’s supporters may disagree with the testimonies given by state auditors during her impeachment trial, but a former official of the Commission on Audit (COA) appealed to Filipinos to remember that auditors are the people’s ally in ensuring accountability.
In an interview with Inquirer on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the trial at the Senate, former COA Commissioner Heidi Mendoza said she hopes people would not get tired of listening to state auditors as they are professional and not biased — and are only doing their job of auditing agencies’ financial transactions.
As of Tuesday, two COA personnel have been presented by the prosecution panel to prove their allegations that Duterte misused confidential funds: Atty. Roderick Wamil and Xylene Mae del Campo, both of the Intelligence and Confidential Funds Audit Office (ICFAO) when they audited the confidential expenses made by Duterte’s offices.
