South Africans could soon see the end of the SABC TV licence as the government considers alternative ways of funding the financially troubled public broadcaster.
The R265-a-year licence has become increasingly difficult for the SABC to collect, with declining payments putting pressure on the broadcaster's ability to fund its public mandate.
SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli previously told Parliament that just 20% of households required to pay the licence fee were complying.
The system has also faced growing criticism as more South Africans turn to streaming services and question why they should pay a separate fee for SABC content.
