Not paying your SABC TV licence can still lead to legal and financial consequences

Not paying your SABC TV licence can still lead to legal and financial consequences, despite growing public debate over whether the system remains relevant in the age of streaming services.

The licence fee, currently set at R265 a year, is meant to fund the public broadcaster and support local content production. But compliance levels have dropped in recent years, with reports suggesting that only 20% of South African households are paying their TV licence fees.

IOL also previously reported that the public broadcaster has stepped up efforts to recover outstanding TV licence fees by sending SMS reminders warning households that they could be handed over to debt collectors.

The broadcaster’s aggressive debt recovery drive comes as non-compliance with TV licence payments continues to rise, placing growing financial strain on the public broadcaster.
