The former Vice President questioned why INEC had not upgraded the operating system despite the resources available to the commission and the approach of major off-cycle elections, including the August 15 Osun governorship election.
Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised fresh concerns over the security and reliability of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He alleged that the electoral technology is being operated on an outdated Android operating system.
Atiku's warning followed concerns arising from the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) August 1 mock accreditation exercise in Osun State and comments by the commission's Director of Information and Communication Technology, Dr Lawrence Bayode, during an interview on Arise Television on Monday.
Bayode reportedly disclosed that BVAS devices deployed by INEC were running on Android 10, an operating system introduced in 2019 and used in Nigeria's electoral process since 2021.
