Goya-nominated actress Zoe Bonafonte (“El 47”) will play Spain’s first female soccer player, Ana “Nita” Carmona Ruiz, in “Veleta,” a Spain-Argentina co-production directed and co-written by Paco Torres (“The Magic of Hope”) and now shooting in Andalusia.
Goya winner Dani Rovira and “Vikings” actor Moe Dunford also star. Amaya Muruzábal, creator of “Hernán” and showrunner of Prime Video hit “Red Queen,” co-wrote and produces “Veleta.”
Blend Studios, Muruzábal’s M Content, Nephilim Producciones and Buenos Aires-based Lahaye Media produce. Andalusia’s public broadcaster RTVA is also providing production funding.
Set in early 20th-century Málaga, “Veleta” follows Carmona, a young working-class player determined to compete in a sport closed to women. She binds her chest, hides her hair and assumes the identity of “Veleta” to get onto the pitch, while her teammates keep her secret for decades.
