SWING AWAY: Tips to clear your left side

One of the most important movements in a good golf swing is learning how to clear the left side through impact. For a right-handed golfer, this means allowing the left hip and left side of the body to rotate out of the way as the club approaches the ball.

Many golfers make the mistake of trying to hit the ball mainly with their arms and hands. When the lower body stops rotating, the arms have nowhere to go. This can lead to blocked shots, hooks, inconsistent contact and the dreaded "chicken wing" through impact.

A good downswing begins from the ground up. As you transition from the top, feel some pressure moving into your left foot. From there, allow the left hip to rotate back and around rather than simply sliding towards the target.

A useful thought is: "Left pocket behind me."
