A body was found in a burnt-out car during efforts to put out a brush fire near the town of Spata east of Athens Tuesday, authorities said.
It appeared likely that the blaze started in the vehicle due to causes not immediately known, and spread through the scrub.
Residents of the Imeros Pefkos area of Spata were warned with a push alert to their phones to prepare for potential evacuation should the order be given. The Fire Service said 115 firefighters with 30 fire engines, backed by five water-dropping aircraft and volunteers, were deployed to the scene and discovered the car with the body inside it.
No information was available on the identity of the victim.
Also Tuesday, firefighters were battling a forest fire near the village of Komboti in the Arta region of western Greece, assisted by four water-bombers.
