(HD Hyundai Oilbank) HD Hyundai Oilbank said Tuesday it has become the first company in South Korea to supply engine oil designed for hydrogen internal combustion engines to domestic commercial vehicle manufacturers, including Tata Daewoo Mobility. The company began developing its proprietary XTeer lubricant for hydrogen internal combustion engines, known as H2-ICEs, in 2023, and the product completed performance testing last year.H2-ICEs operate at higher combustion temperatures and can experience greater wear and oil degradation due to moisture generated during combustion. To address these challenges, HD Hyundai Oilbank developed three core technologies — engine protection, moisture control and combustion deposit suppression. The engines have been drawing attention as an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel engines for commercial vehicles and heavy-duty transport equipment, alongside battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The company expects wider adoption of H2-ICEs due to its shorter refueling time and ability to leverage existing internal combustion engine infrastructure.Meanwhile, HD Hyundai has also been expanding its hydrogen engine business, including plans announced by HD Hyundai Construction Equipment to mass-produce hydrogen engines for trucks. In line with that strategy, HD Hyundai Oilbank said it is strengthening its lubricant portfolio to support conventional internal combustion engines, H2-ICEs and electric vehicles."We have secured proprietary lubricant technology for H2-ICEs through our own research and development and have successfully commercialized it," a company official said."We will continue expanding our portfolio of high-value-added lubricant solutions for the global market to respond proactively to changes in the future mobility industry."
