Bulgaria is in talks with the United States, the European Commission and Frontex over the acquisition of more effective anti-drone systems, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said following the crash of a Ukrainian-made decoy drone near the Romanian border.
Demerdzhiev said Bulgaria currently has only a limited number of systems for detecting and countering drones, and their capabilities are also limited. He said the government intends to acquire the equipment needed to strengthen the country's defenses, including along the Bulgarian border.
“We have identified this problem and are working on it, but purely technologically it cannot be solved in a month or two,” the interior minister told reporters.
According to Demerdzhiev, Bulgarian authorities have already held talks with US partners, European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner and the leadership of Frontex. The Ministry of Defense and the Council of Ministers are also involved in efforts to address the issue.
