OPPOSITION Member of Parliament Camille Robinson-Regis yesterday apologised to Urban Development Corporation of T&T (UDeCOTT) Chairman Shankar Bidaisee over remarks she made at a news conference on Thursday concerning two HDC insurance brokerage contracts.Her apology was issued in a release yesterday following the publication of an article in the Sunday Express in which Bidaisee threatened legal action if she did not publicly apologise and withdraw the statement.Bidaisee, through his attorney Patricia Dindyal, issued a pre-action protocol letter demanding that Robinson-Regis retract the statements and issue a public apology by 4 p.m. today.The letter referred to comments made by Robinson-Regis in which she raised questions about two HDC insurance brokerage contracts with a combined value of about $6.12 million.Dindyal also indicated that she would be seeking damages for alleged injury to Bidaisee’s reputation, along with reimbursement of his legal costs.In the release, Regis stated that she had not been served with any pre action protocol letter on the matter as she is currently out of the country.Even so, she stated, “I think it prudent to respond to correct the record without delay.”Setting the record straight, she explained, “In my remarks I referred to “the Chairman of UDeCOTT” in connection with Comprehensive Insurance Brokers Ltd. This was a genuine error.“I had intended to refer to Mr Peter Kanhai, Chairman of the National Carnival Commission and a Board Member and Deputy Chairman of UDeCOTT, who has served as Executive Director, Technical and Marketing at Comprehensive Insurance Brokers Ltd., since 1985.”The MP added, “I did not intend to suggest, and do not believe, that Mr Shankar Bidaisee, Chairman of UDeCOTT, has any connection to Comprehensive Insurance Brokers Ltd or to the contracts in question.“To the extent my error created that impression, I unreservedly apologise to Mr Bidaisee, and I ask that this release be treated as a correction of the record,” she stated.In her comments which were made during the People’s National Movement news conference in Port of Spain on Thursday, Robinson-Regis raised questions about two insurance brokerage contracts awarded by the HDC to Comprehensive Insurance Brokers Ltd, which she said totalled approximately $6.12 million.She stated that the company’s former managing director is Dr Colin Neil Gosine, the Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, while its current chairman is also associated with the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (UDeCOTT).
