Indonesia has a central bank leadership vacuum to fill, and President Prabowo Subianto has nominated Acting Governor Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for the permanent Bank Indonesia governorship.
The nomination follows the surprise resignation of veteran governor Perry Warjiyo on July 27, 2026, nearly two years before his term was scheduled to end. Warjiyo had led the institution since 2018, and his departure triggered immediate scrutiny from global investors who were already watching Indonesia’s financial position with some anxiety.
From acting governor to frontrunner
Destry, born in December 1963, holds degrees from the University of Indonesia and Cornell, and was most recently reappointed as Bank Indonesia’s senior deputy governor for the 2024-2029 term before stepping up in an acting capacity after Warjiyo’s exit.
Market reactions to Destry’s interim leadership have been relatively calm. The formal nomination process is tied to the legislative calendar. Parliament, the DPR, was on recess at the time of the announcement and is scheduled to begin deliberations after August 14, 2026.
