The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed Tenkasi Collector to appoint a team of officers to ensure the proper maintenance of Courtallam falls in Tenkasi district.A Division Bench of Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel directed the Collector to appoint a team of officers to continuously monitor the crowd, facilities to be provided for crowd management, steps to be taken to prevent accidents and the medical facilities available in the vicinity.The court directed the team to monitor the proximity of the stalls and the nature of items they sell, ensure that the stalls do not have LPG cylinders or any other inflammable materials which would cause damage to the surrounding area and also to ensure that there was proper vehicle management at the site. Steps should be taken to ensure proper maintenance of the paintings in Chitra Sabai.The court also sought a report from the District Collector regarding the steps taken to ensure that there was no danger to the lives of the tourists in cases where there was extreme flooding.The court said the Collector may interact with the Advocate Commissioner, who had been appointed by the court, to ensure that the locality surrounding the falls and the falls itself are visitor friendly and has all the facilities to cope with the rush.The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition filed by R. Krishnasamy who sought a direction to the authorities to provide adequate facilities, safety and protection to the tourists visiting the Old Courtallam falls.
