The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed Block Development Officer of Veppampatti village panchayat in Theni district to consider a representation made and pass orders on a plea to restore the existing water channel/stream leading to the Chikkanagounden kanmai.The court was hearing a petition filed by Karuppiah of Theni district. The petitioner sought a direction to the authorities to restore the existing water channel/stream leading to the kanmai by renovating and desilting the waterbody to ensure proper discharge of rainwater into the kanmai.The petitioner said the kanmai was situated in Veppampatti village in Uthamapalayam taluk in Theni district. The village consists of several acres of agricultural lands. Due to the inaction and negligence on the part of the officials concerned, the portion of the stream running from south to north had become obliterated and had not been desilted. Restoration and desilting was necessary for proper flow of rainwater, he said. The State submitted that an inquiry would be conducted and the representations would be considered.A Division Bench of Justices A. D. Jagadish Chandira and P. Vadamalai directed Block Development Officer of the village panchayat to consider the petitioner’s representations and pass appropriate orders on merits in two weeks.
