Commuters have urged the Salem Corporation to reduce traffic congestion at Four Roads, and to bring the traffic signals in the locality to full operation.Four Roads, an important junction on Omalur Main Road, allows vehicles heading to the Salem Collectorate, Old Bus Stand, Kottai Mariamman Temple, Ramakrishna Road, New Bus Stand, Arisipalayam, and Shevapet Market to pass through. Since various textile shops are located at the TVS bus stop, vehicles must travel via Four Roads to reach the TVS bus stop from Ramakrishna Road, Arisipalayam, Shevapet, and the Old Bus Stand.Likewise, a private school and a government-aided school are functioning near the Four Roads Junction. During morning and evening hours, hundreds of auto rickshaws and two-wheelers head to schools to drop off and pick up students, creating traffic congestion a common problem in the locality.R. Tamilarasan, a resident of Shevapet, said that there are traffic signals installed on three ways in Four Roads Junction except at Permanur Road, which are not operated. Due to its absence, vehicles from all four ways at the junction approach at the same time, creating traffic congestion.Due to this, students travelling to schools are affected and minor accidents have been reported at the junction. Due to the absence of signals, two-wheeler riders operate their vehicles at high speed. Before constructing a two-tier flyover, traffic signals were operated in this junction. “Traffic signals should be operated once again to regulate traffic,” he added.The Salem City Police officials assured to look into their demand.
