Pedestrians and residents of Sankar Nagar demand a foot overbridge that connects Anna Park and the bus stop on Omalur Main Road to prevent accidents.Anna Park is one of the main hangouts for the Salem residents that spreads over two acres of land.During weekends and holidays, a large number of people visit the park. Likewise, before Anna Park, there are statues of former Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandran, M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa. During the birth and death anniversaries of these leaders, various party cadres come to the park to garland the statues.People residing in Sankar Nagar, behind the park, who want to reach the New Bus Stand by bus have to reach the bus stop in Omalur Main Road opposite Anna Park. Similarly, people coming from Old Bus Stand, Kondalampatti, Shevapet, and Nethimedu reach the bus stop in Omalur Main Road by bus and then cross the road to reach Anna Park. As the Omalur Main Road is the main way to reach Four Roads, New Bus Stand, and Five Roads, vehicles pass round-the-clock on both sides of the road.R. Kulanthaivel, a resident of Sankar Nagar, said that the State Highways Department constructed centre medians to avoid people crossing the road considering traffic flow. But, people are using the gaps in the medians, crossing the road in a dangerous manner and sometimes injured in accidents. To avoid walking a short distance, people are crossing the road to reach Anna Park. To avoid accidents, the department officials concerned should construct a foot overbridge that connects the bus stop on Omalur Main Road and Anna Park. It will help people reach Anna Park, Sankar Nagar, and the bus stop without disturbing the vehicle movement. The government should consider this demand, he added.Officials attached to the Salem Corporation and the State Highways Department said they would look into this demand.
