The unemployment rate dipped to 4.1%, but economists had expected a gain of roughly 83,000 to 95,000 jobs

The U.S. economy shed 23,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, reversing the revised 20,000-job gain recorded in June and coming in well under the 34,000 average monthly gain over the preceding 12 months.
Surveyed economists had anticipated 83,000 new jobs for July, according to The Wall Street Journal. A separate consensus put the expected figure at 95,000, according to Barron's.
