Government and eThekwini Municipality officials have called for the community to help police find the gunman involved in Thursday's murder of Councillor Sibusiso Khwela.
The eThekwini Ward 17 Councillor was shot dead in his office in Klaarwater on Thursday by a lone gunman. The man was waiting in the queue outside Khwela's office. According to police, he then entered the office and shot Khwela.
Khwela was an ANC councillor since 2021, but was not standing as a candidate in the Local Government Elections scheduled for November.
Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi said such acts were intended to instill fear within communities, particularly as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.
