The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said the murder of eThekwini councillor Sibusiso Khwela was barbaric and an attack on democratic institutions.
Khwela, the municipality's Ward 17 councillor, was shot dead inside his office in Klaarwater, near Mariannhill, on Thursday.
According to police, Khwela was in his office with several community members when an unknown man arrived and posed as someone needing assistance.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that when the councillor went outside to assist, the man drew a firearm and shot him several times. Khwela died at the scene.
