Bogotá (EFE).- Colombian President Gustavo Petro is serving the final day of his four-year term on Thursday, a period during which he radically transformed the way the country is governed. He departs with the promise to return to the role where he perhaps feels most comfortable: leader of the opposition.
Petro will leave office on Friday as far-right leader Abelardo de la Espriella is sworn in for the period 2026-2030. This marks the end of four years in which he championed an ambitious program of social reforms, the «total peace» policy, an active international agenda, and a discourse centered on social justice and energy transition.
The 66-year-old leader bid farewell on Wednesday to the staff at the Casa de Nariño presidential palace. He took a final photo with some of his closest ministers and collaborators, which was posted on social media by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).
«Colombia’s first leftist government leaves behind a chapter that will mark the country’s political history,» UNGRD Director Javier Pava stated in the message accompanying the photo.
