A Pristine Ferrari 288 GTO, the Marque’s First Halo Car, Could Fetch $11 Million at Auction

Ferrari‘s first halo car may be over 40 years old at this point, but there are still some barely driven examples out there.

Next week, RM Sotheby’s will auction off a gorgeous 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO as part of its annual Monterey sale. The example up for bid has been well looked after, but the main reason why it’s expected to fetch an eight-figure gavel price is that it has less than 1,000 miles on the odometer.

The Ferrari F40 may be the most revered of Ferrari’s halo cars, but it’s the 288 GTO, or just plain old GTO, that was first. The car debuted in 1984 and paired a timeless design by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti with a racing-derived V-8. This formula proved to be a hit and can be seen in all of the supercar’s successors, including the aforementioned F40, the F50, the Enzo, the LaFerrari, and, most recently, the F80.
