Member of Parliament C. Robert Bruce has appealed to Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw to increase the frequency of two express trains connecting Kanniyakumari and Chennai from weekly and tri-weekly services into daily service considering the huge demand for tickets on any given day.In a memorandum submitted to the Minister recently, Mr. Robert Bruce said the Chennai – Kanniyakumar section via Madurai and Tirunelveli generates huge revenue for Southern Railway even though very few trains are being operated in this section and no overnight train had been introduced in this section during the past few decades. Hence, the Southern Railway should give priority for introducing new trains in this section.In this connection, the Kanniyakumari – Tambaram tri-weekly express train and the Chennai Central – Kanniyakumari weekly express train should be upgraded into daily service to serve the hundreds of wait-listed commuters, who have to now rely on government and private buses to reach their destinations.“Even though these appeals were discussed and approved earlier, it was yet to be implemented,” Mr. Robert Bruce pointed out.Similarly, the recently introduced Thiruvananthapuram Central – Tambaram Amrit Bharat Weekly Express is also enjoying high occupancy and hence it should be operated daily.The MP also said in the memorandum that the Kollam – Kanniyakumari MEMU should be extended up to Tirunelveli.
