Coimbatore City Police Commissioner N. Kannan placed a policeman under suspension after he was arrested on Wednesday on charge of groping a female college student on a moving bus.The disciplinary action was taken against Manivendhan, a Grade II constable attached to the Podanur police station, Investigation Wing.Manivendhan allegedly groped and misbehaved with the college student when she was travelling on a bus operating on Pollachi – Coimbatore route on Wednesday morning. The girl got down from the bus midway following the ordeal. She later lodged a complaint with the All Women Police Station, Perur. The policeman was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.A statement from the Coimbatore City Police said that the disciplinary action was initiated after the policeman’s conduct breached departmental discipline and tarnished the reputation of the police force.It stated that Coimbatore City Police give utmost importance to the safety and dignity of women. Appropriate legal action will be taken impartially and without prejudice in the event of receiving complaints regarding unlawful activities by anyone, including police personnel, it said.
