Kolkata: The West Bengal government will distribute 70 lakh national flags ahead of Independence Day, with the state joining the Centre's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign for the first time this year, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Thursday.Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the state cabinet, Adhikari said the Tricolours would be distributed in all districts, subdivisions, municipalities and blocks as part of a statewide campaign to encourage citizens to hoist the national flag.Also Read: West Bengal to convene special assembly session on August 12 for Kolkata, Howrah ward delimitationThe campaign, launched on the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will involve government departments, educational institutions, cultural organisations, youth bodies and the general public, he said.As part of the initiative, important government buildings, heritage structures and cultural institutions will be illuminated in the colours of the national flag, he said.Industries, hotels, shopping malls and other commercial establishments have also been urged to participate, he added.Also Read: Bengal eyes Rs 20,000 crore investment push under new govtAdhikari said a Tiranga Rally will be organised in Kolkata on August 10, adding that over 30,000 people have already expressed interest in participating and the turnout is expected to reach around 50,000.He said he would also organise a Tiranga Rally in his Bhawanipur assembly constituency to mark the launch of the campaign.Appealing to people to participate irrespective of political affiliation, the chief minister said the initiative was aimed at promoting patriotism and national unity.
