Former Shoprite Group Executive Director Bhikram "Ram" Harisunker, a Glenashley resident whose retail career began at Checkers Davenport Road in Glenwood as a 17-year-old receiving clerk, dedicated more than 53 years to the Shoprite Group and became one of South Africa's most respected retail leaders and mentors.
One of Durban's most respected retail leaders, former Shoprite Group Executive Director Bhikram "Ram" Harisunker, has died after dedicating more than five decades to helping build Africa's largest supermarket retailer while mentoring countless colleagues along the way.
Harisunker, who lived in Glenashley, died last week after an extraordinary 53-year career with the Shoprite Group. His passing has prompted tributes from colleagues, former employees and business leaders who remember him not only for his rise through the ranks, but for his humility, wisdom and commitment to developing people.
Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Harisunker's retail journey began in 1969 when, at 17 years old, he joined the Checkers Davenport Road store in Glenwood as a Receiving Clerk. What started as a temporary job to earn money for university became a lifelong career that would take him from the shop floor to the company's highest levels of leadership.
