Phoebe Bridgers is thought to have unpacked the end of her engagement to Paul Mescal, as well as his relationship with Gracie Abrams, on her new album.11:00, 06 Aug 2026Updated 11:01, 06 Aug 2026Phoebe Bridgers has the world waiting for her new album, Lost Weekend, in which she finally unpacks the end of her relationship with Paul Mescal. The 31-year-old’s upcoming release comes six years after her last solo efforts with 2020’s Punisher, and a lot has changed, including her engagement and subsequent split with the Normal People star, 30, and her current romance with Bo Burnham.Despite keeping her private life tightly under wraps in this time, early reviews for the record suggest that drew on these experiences in the lyrics, including one particular line that could be interpreted as a swipe against Paul’s new girlfriend, fellow singer Gracie Abrams, 26.According to the Independent, lyrics for the titular track detailing her split include: “I’m supposed to be married, but I called it off. I’ve been known to throw a tantrum when things are not the way I imagine them.“I am restoring the natural order, learning the same lesson over and over again.”In a review from the Guardian, it is suggested that she references 26-year-old Gracie in The Governor’s Waltz, with the lines, “She can pretend to be me since she took my place in my bed, on that stage”.Fans speculated that the mention of the bed on stage could be regarding a bedroom stage set-up the Close To You singer has used during performances in the past, which were similar to pictures Phoebe had previously posted. She previously dated Paul for around two years, when they were first linked in 2020 after a very flirty Twitter exchange - they made their red carpet debut the following year, before going Instagram official. However, shortly after engagement rumours swirled, the pair quietly went their separate ways at the end of 2022. While the musician soon moved on with Bo, the Gladiator actor publicly started dating Gracie in 2024.To make things even more complicated, Phoebe and Gracie had a friendship of their own and the latter even landed a coveted slot as the support act for the Grammy-winner on her Reunion Tour in 2021.The pair also went on the road together as part of the opening for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in 2023.Despite now dating for around two years, Paul has made sure to keep his latest romance private. During an interview with the Rolling Stone last year, he was questioned about the moment that they decided to go public, after weeks of speculation over their status.“I don’t know how to answer that,” he admitted. “I actually do have an answer, but everything to do with that is deeply precious to me and I don’t want to.…Article continues below“I want to protect those things fundamentally.”Lost Weekend is released on August 14.Like this story?
