A Russian attack struck a civilian cargo vessel carrying Ukrainian wheat in the Black Sea on Thursday, Aug. 6, killing one person and injuring three others, Odesa Regional Military Administration Head Oleh Kiper said. According to Oleh Kiper, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged dry cargo ship sustained damage to its hull after coming under Russian attack. The vessel’s crew was evacuated to shore, while the injured are receiving medical assistance. Kiper said the vessel was transporting a cargo of Ukrainian wheat when it was hit. “The enemy continues to relentlessly attack civilian vessels in the Black Sea. Unfortunately, one person was killed and three others were injured,” Kiper wrote. He added that the latest strike once again demonstrated what he described as the “systematic and cynical nature of Russian terror.” Kiper said Russia’s continued attacks on civilian shipping endanger both civilian lives and global food security. “Such strikes once again demonstrate the systematic and cynical nature of Russian terror, creating a threat both to the lives of civilians and to global food security as a whole,” he said. Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of targeting port infrastructure and civilian merchant vessels involved in exporting Ukrainian agricultural products through the Black Sea.
