Russian forces have killed people in a wave of attacks targeting merchant ships in the Black Sea, marking an escalation in maritime aggression that threatens one of the world’s most important grain export routes.
The strikes hit foreign-flagged vessels operating within Ukraine’s maritime corridor near Odesa. The ships were flagged under Tanzania and Liberia, meaning their crews were international civilians caught in the crossfire of a conflict they had no part in.
What happened in the Black Sea
On July 14, Russian forces attacked at least two merchant vessels in the Black Sea. At least three crew members were confirmed dead from those specific strikes, with several others injured. Ukrainian authorities initiated emergency evacuations of the surviving crew.
During the same timeframe, Russian military operations across Ukraine were linked to a total of 14 fatalities. Earlier attacks in May and June 2026 involved drone strikes on commercial shipping that killed one crew member each time.
