The government announced initial emergency support measures for people affected by a destructive wildfire that struck parts of western Attica and Viotia, following an interministerial meeting convened by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Authorities expect damage assessments covering homes, businesses and other facilities to be completed by Thursday. To speed declarations and compensation claims, the government decided that, once Parliament returns, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection will submit legislation to digitize all related procedures.
Measures announced include the suspension of employment contracts for workers at affected businesses, with support of €534 per month for three months. Businesses and households hit by the fire will receive a six-month suspension and restructuring of social insurance and tax obligations, while auctions and foreclosures will be suspended for 12 months. The business support measure will also be extended to Psatha and Alepochori.
Instructions were also issued to ELGA, the agricultural insurance agency, to compensate affected farming and livestock activities.
The government said anti-erosion and flood-control projects will begin immediately, while a restoration and reforestation sponsorship process has been activated to finance interventions. Two companies will fund the works. Studies are scheduled to be completed by September 15, with projects finished by the end of the year.
