CINCINNATI — After undergoing an MRI on his right elbow Wednesday, Hunter Greene was placed on the injured list and is off to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.The Cincinnati Reds right-hander experienced soreness in his elbow following a side session Tuesday, prompting the imaging. Greene, who turns 27 on Thursday, made five starts for the Reds this season after beginning the year on the injured list following arthroscopic surgery this spring to remove loose bodies in his right elbow.Now he’s headed to a Thursday visit with ElAttrache, who performed his surgery in March. Greene had Tommy John surgery as a minor-leaguer in 2019.“He had some soreness when he came out of his side and we sent him to see a doctor first thing this morning,” said Nick Krall, the team’s president of baseball operations.Krall said he was waiting on the results from Dr. ElAttrache before making further comments.
Greene was 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA in his five starts before returning to the IL. After giving up eight runs in 3 1/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles on July 4 in his first start of the season, he struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs in his second start.An All-Star in 2024, Greene has gone on the IL in each of his five big-league seasons. The No. 2 pick in the 2017 draft has a career 27-31 record and 3.83 ERA since his debut in 2022.“It’s unfortunate, but it’s unfortunate for him that he’s going through this,” Krall said of Greene. “He obviously had the bone spurs this offseason. Hopefully everything is going to be OK for him.”The Reds recalled right-handed reliever Luis Mey from Triple-A Louisville to take Greene’s roster spot. Greene was scheduled to start Thursday’s series finale against the Athletics, but lefty Andrew Abbott will make that start instead. The Reds had an off day Monday, so Abbott will be on regular rest.Left-hander Nick Lodolo made his first rehab start at Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. Lodolo is on the IL with a blister on his left index finger for the second time this season. Lodolo allowed three runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts. He threw 65 pitches, 37 for strikes.Left-hander Brandon Williamson, who started the season in the team’s rotation, is scheduled to make his second rehab start Thursday for Louisville.
