March 10 (UPI) -- Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene will undergo surgery on his right elbow and is expected to be out until July, president of baseball operations Nick Krall told reporters Tuesday.
Green, who was diagnosed with bone chips and loose bodies in the elbow, will undergo surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the procedure.
"It's definitely good news compared to what it could have been," Krall said, according to MLB.com. "You're thinking the worst. The ulnar collateral ligament [UCL] looked intact and good. So that's a positive."
Greene underwent an MRI on Friday after he experienced stiffness in the elbow after his Feb. 28 spring training debut. The right-handed pitcher allowed five hits and four runs, with one walk, over one inning of work in the Reds' 9-7 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
