NEW DELHILieutenant-Governor (L-G) Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to explore the use of its land for cultural and creative activities, while asking the agency and the Tourism Department to prepare an action plan to promote the Capital’s heritage, arts and design traditions.According to an official release issued by Lok Niwas, the L-G chaired a meeting with the DDA Vice-Chairman, the Tourism Secretary and other officials, during which he said the national capital should develop its own globally recognised cultural events through public-private partnerships and focus more on expanding its night-time cultural and commercial economy. He said such events could become recurring fixtures on Delhi’s calendar, attracting visitors while providing opportunities for artists, performers and small businesses.During the meeting, he asked the DDA to examine how its existing public spaces could be used for art installations, performances and other heritage-linked activities. He also directed the departments to identify actionable measures to take the proposals forward in the coming months.Calling Delhi “a melting pot of cultures from across India”, the L-G said the city’s heritage should be showcased through initiatives that allow residents and tourists to engage more closely with its history. He suggested promoting heritage walks and similar programmes, saying such experiences often helped people appreciate a city’s cultural legacy more than monuments or exhibitions alone, the release stated.Mr. Sandhu also said culture and heritage should be viewed not only as subjects of preservation but also as tools for building civic identity and supporting livelihoods through the creative economy.
