Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed during a telephone conversation with Khalil al-Hayya, the newly appointed head of Hamas’s political bureau, that the Palestinian cause remains at the apex of the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy priorities.
Iranian state media reported that Pezeshkian called Khalil al-Hayya on Wednesday, August 5, to congratulate him on his election to lead the militant group’s political bureau.
According to state news outlets, Pezeshkian emphasized during the call that the Palestinian issue retains a central position in Tehran’s foreign policy agenda. He added that the Islamic Republic will support any decisions or initiatives adopted by the Palestinian leadership in indirect negotiations with Israel.
For his part, Khalil al-Hayya requested that Hamas draw upon the insights and expertise of Islamic Republic officials during the course of the negotiations.
Al-Hayya assumed leadership of Hamas’s political bureau following his election to replace Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh was killed two years ago in an attack in Tehran while attending Pezeshkian’s inauguration ceremony.
