Since first uttering the term “Googlebook,” Google hasn’t made a great case for its laptops beyond adding AI to the mouse cursor. But the first leaks of what appears to be a new round of Android-based laptops are actually starting to get us—if not overtly excited—at least skeptically interested in whether Googlebooks can become the capable notebooks Chromebooks never could. The first supposed Googlebook leaks from Lenovo and Asus have slithered their way into the dark corners of the internet. On Tuesday, 9to5Google presented images of a supposed Asus “Chromebook CX9406.” The images first appeared in a since-deleted listing on iF Design’s website. While the product is described as a Chromebook, it’s supposedly using Aluminum OS, the codename for the operating system powering Google’s next slate of laptops. The Lenovo model is even more interesting. Digital Citizen shared more leaked images of the Lenovo Googlebook 15 with its sleek white chassis. Both the Lenovo and Asus Googlebook contain a dedicated “G” key, similar to modern Chromebook Plus models. It’s likely to work as a dedicated Gemini AI button to bring up a chatbot prompt or other AI features such as Circle to Search. These laptops also sport a key that seems to contain the same “Quick Launch” glyph in the space usually occupied by the Caps Lock key.
