LIDD said that, as an organisation committed to defending democracy and the rule of law, it considers it its responsibility to ensure that citizens exercising their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly are not left without legal protection.

Some Nigerian legal practitioners under the Lawyers in Defence of Democracy Initiative (LIDD) have announced that they will deploy members of their organisation to provide legal support and monitor the protection of protesters' rights during the nationwide peaceful protest planned by the Take-It-Back Movement on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

In a press statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the organisation said the decision followed the Take-It-Back Movement's call for peaceful demonstrations aimed at reminding the government of its obligations to citizens.

The statement was signed by Joseph Aliu, Public Relations Officer of the Lawyers in Defence of Democracy Initiative.

"The Lawyers In Defence of Democracy Initiative notes that the Take-It-Back Movement has called for peaceful protests on August 5, aimed at reminding government of its obligations to the people it serves," the statement read.
