—The nomination: Uganda formally nominated Olara Otunnu for UN Secretary-General on 24 July 2026. The UN circulated the nomination to all 193 member states on 25 July 2026.
—The candidate: Otunnu, born in 1950, is a former Ugandan Foreign Minister and UN Under-Secretary-General. He invented the “Otunnu Formula” straw-ballot system for choosing the Secretary-General in 1981.
—The campaign: President Yoweri Museveni personally presented Otunnu to Security Council representatives at State House Entebbe. Former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda leads a special envoy to lobby foreign governments.
