The Government of Uganda has officially nominated Ambassador Olara Otunnu, a veteran diplomat and former senior United Nations official, as its candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, ahead of the expiration of the tenure of the current UN chief, António Guterres, on December 31, 2026.
The announcement was made in a press release issued by Uganda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday in Kampala, where the government said it had formally submitted Otunnu's candidature for consideration by UN member states.
According to the statement, Ambassador Otunnu brings "over four decades of distinguished service at the highest levels of international diplomacy," having served within the United Nations system as well as in senior leadership positions across government, academia and civil society.
