More than 50 patient and professional organisations, including the Endocrine Society, collaborated on the renaming process, which experts say better reflects the condition's complexity and the wide range of symptoms experienced by women.
The Endocrine Society said PMOS is characterised by hormonal fluctuations that affect weight, metabolism, mental health, the skin and the reproductive system.
Professor Helena Teede, director of Monash University's Monash Centre for Health Research & Implementation and a member of the Endocrine Society, said the previous name was scientifically misleading.
"What we now know is that there is actually no increase in abnormal cysts on the ovary, and the diverse features of the condition were often unappreciated," she said.
