Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says government is considering GBVF funding options after the ANC Women’s League called for dedicated resources to address gender-based violence and support survivors.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says the government is considering how resources should be allocated to address gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), with further details expected in the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), following calls from the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) for dedicated funding.
The ANCWL delivered a memorandum to Godongwana at the National Treasury in Pretoria on Tuesday, arguing that government had failed to allocate resources to tackle GBVF despite President Cyril Ramaphosa classifying the crisis as a national disaster.
The league said the classification should result in improved access to survivor services, emergency support, prevention programmes, monitoring, reporting and oversight.
Responding to the memorandum, Godongwana acknowledged the concerns raised by the ANCWL, saying there was a legitimate expectation that the classification of GBVF should translate into practical interventions.
