President Cyril Ramaphosa said he believed the council would bring greater authority to South Africa's response to GBVF.
In a significant move to combat gender-based violence in the country, President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially established the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (NCGBVF).
The newly formed statutory body aims to enhance leadership and accountability in addressing one of the nation’s most urgent social issues. The appointments, which were made public on Friday, will commence on August 1 and are set to continue until July 31, 2029.
Established under the National Council on Gender-Based Violence Act of 2024, the council is responsible for providing strategic leadership on efforts to eliminate gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), while coordinating the implementation of the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on GBVF across government and other sectors.
The president appointed Dr Ramalepe Lebogang Mathibe as chairperson of the council and designated Welheminah "Shoki" Tshabalala as deputy chairperson.
